ESF Ph.D. Student Wins American Chemical Society Award
Hanyue Yang, a second-year Ph.D. student at the (ESF), has been recognized with the esteemed 2024 Environmental Chemistry Graduate Student Award by the American Chemical Society (ACS). She is one of just 20 students nationwide to receive the award, which underscores Yang鈥檚 exceptional academic achievements and research productivity.
鈥淗anyue is an outstanding student who is dedicated to her academic and research pursuits in environmental science. She is accomplished and passionate, and we congratulate her on this impressive recognition,鈥� said ESF President Joanie Mahoney.
In her studies, Yang applies integrated metabolomics and metagenomics, microfluidics, and data science to decipher complex interactions between the rhizosphere microbiome and plant roots. As a member of the Environmental Microbiome Research (EMR) lab, she collaborates with professionals under the guidance of ESF Assistant Professor Dr. Yaqi You to study critical environmental issues with a focus on microbial communities in natural and engineered systems.
Previously, Yang鈥檚 research focused on the applications of nanotechnology in agriculture. She has published as first author and co-author in journals such as ACS Nano, Environmental Science & Technology, and Environmental Science Nano and is the recipient of several awards, including a travel grant from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors. Yang鈥檚 long-term goal is to leverage multidisciplinary approaches to solve sustainable development challenges, particularly those related to agriculture. She also wants to promote inclusion in STEM education, as it can bring in new solutions for global environmental challenges.

natural resources. Members of the College community share a passion for protecting

live, study and do research on the main campus in Syracuse, N.Y., and on 25,000 acres
of field stations in a variety of ecosystems across the state.
